Why I Made My Website
I've thrown this together after a rush of inspiration from a couple of seemingly unrelated sources. First, from a few weeks ago, when I stumbled upon the website of one Casey Handmer, and from there, his blog that he kept up to date during his insane travels from 2006 onwards, through much of the far east, Russia, and Europe.
More recently, 37Signals came back on my radar, with their minimalistic approach to marketing and presenting their products to the world. They're blunt, honest, simple, authentic, and most importantly, uncompromising. They don't stoop to the lame small-boy-stuff when it comes to their company, products, or presentation, even if that comes at the expense of results.
And finally, I got totally fed up with social media. My friends never post on Instagram anymore, so all I see there is memes, stupid videos I don't care about and the occasional story. On Twitter, I find things that pique my intellectual curiosity, but the app sucks up too much of my time and makes me feel like a zombie, scrolling and not engaging much, feeling forced when I do.
I suspect I may need to be the type of person that doesn't care about social media or replying to other people. Just record the important parts of my life in one place that my friends and people that matter can see, share links on other platforms where appropriate, but otherwise avoid spending time on those apps that waste your life away.
Socializing's great, but doomscrolling sucks.
